October 2020 Member of the Month: Karla Ramos

Congratulations to Karla, our October 2020 Member of the Month. Read the raves from our coaching staff about her below:

Karla is a super dedicated and quiet warrior. She is diligent and consistent. She pushes herself but knows how to scale appropriately. She's in it for the long haul. Plus, she is woke AF!

Karla has great energy always smiling and dancing. She's very respectful to coaches and always has a tone of listening and understanding. She's very engaging to other members in the gym.

Karla! Love having her in class. She’s been very consistent since we reopened. Always comes to class ready to work and readily puts feedback into practice. Her technique has been improving rapidly. Excited to see her putting more weight on the bar!

Karla has a really great attitude and shows up ready to put in the work. She does a good job of working at the upper limits of her abilities, and tries to push herself to get better. If there was a consistency award, she'd get it!

Do you have any nicknames?

No. When I was little I was a bit jealous of my brother because he got the nickname and I didn't.

Where are you from? Puerto Rico. I'm from a town called Toa Baja, about a 20 min drive west from San Juan.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? A little over 2 years. CWCF was my first and only CrossFit gym I've been to.

What brought you to CWCF? I moved to MA in late spring of 2018. I was looking for an alternative to work out and kept seeing people run on the sidewalk while carrying medballs (and some of them even seemed to be enjoying it) so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did!

What classes do you usually attend? First class in the morning! Used to be part of the 5:30 AM crew pre-COVID times, now we've moved to 6:00 AM and I'm definitely appreciating the extra 30 min of sleep.

What are you doing to keep up with your fitness and community during the pandemic? The park WODs were definitely key for keeping my sanity in the beginning of the pandemic. Now I've been keeping up with the daily workouts at the gym and it's often the best part of my day.

What do you love about CWCF?

The community. I'm sure this is a common answer, but it's because it's true! I love being able to workout with people and coaches that are so supportive.

What do you do outside of CrossFit?  I'm a chemist working in medical research. I work developing radioactive imaging agents to monitor neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury. If you've had an MRI or PET scan, I make and study the contrast agents that are injected to get better images of the brain. Outside of work, I love playing volleyball, obstacle races and being outdoors (especially when it's warm).

What is something about you we might not know?

I love dancing, especially salsa. Before the pandemic hit, I used to take lessons 4-5 nights a week and I can't wait until we can start dancing again. In the meantime, I take random dance breaks during the day every time I can.

Who is your superhero? Strong women and anyone who can stay positive through tough times, both things that characterize my mom.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Any movement where I can use my legs to make myself feel strong. I think I would say lunges or thrusters.  What is your greatest achievement in the gym so far? Consistency, I'm so happy that I've been able to make this one of the best parts of my daily routine. What is one short-term goal, one long-term goal, and what have you been doing to work on them?

Pull-ups are my eternal goal. During the pandemic, I started working on dubs and have gotten better at them, so for now those are my short-term goal.

What motivates or inspires you? Pushing myself and seeing progress. I'm always competing with an older version of myself and trying to get better everyday.

What is your best tip for new members? Focus on good form and don't feel any shame in scaling the WODs. Trust me, you'll still get a good workout.
