June 2020 Member of the Month: Noreen Lyell

Congratulations to our June 2020 Member of the Month, Noreen Lyell! This is what our coaches are saying about how fantastic she is!

"Despite being a few months since I've last seen the post-WOD exhausted smile, it is one of my favorite things about Noreen. She never sugar coats how a workout is going to feel, but she shows up anyhow and gives it her all. She also is a great role model for our members and regularly spends time doing the necessary "extras" of warming up and cooling down. Finally, her sense of humor is one of my favorite things... it's not usually loud or demonstrative, but if you keep your ears open you catch some excellent gems."

"Noreen is a very down to Earth and self-aware athlete. She has much respect for the coaches, members, the community as a whole. She dedicates herself to an effort in class that is relative and appropriate to her skills and goals always."  "Noreen is the kind of member that we know will have longevity at our gym. She comes in with realistic goals and works towards them with dedication and consistent effort. She takes her fitness seriously, but is also patient and shows compassion for herself and others. I enjoy coaching her as much as working out alongside her."

"Noreen is a joy to have at the gym! My favorite coaching moment was when she was crushing chest to bar pull-ups one day....then I came to find out afterwards that that was her first time doing them! I think that sums up Noreen as an athlete. She works hard and is consistent and continually applies herself to new challenges. So glad she’s a part of Commonwealth!"

"Yes Noreen! Week in and week out she is putting in the work and making gains- all while wearing a big smile and some of the best tank tops you'll see at the box. Noreen is a joy to be around and to coach, and makes everyone want to have fun while throwing down. Plus she keeps that slacker Brent on track as an added bonus."

Do you have any nicknames?

Nope.  Fun fact: my mom picked my name because she didn't think Noreen lent itself to obvious nicknames.

Where are you from? Phoenix, AZ How long have you been doing CrossFit? 5 years. What brought you to CWCF?

Running aggravated an old knee injury and I wanted something that would help build my leg muscles.  I started at an all-women's box because I found a Groupon :) What classes do you usually attend? 6:30a and I am a big fan of open gym on Sunday.

What are you doing to keep up with your fitness and community during the pandemic? Most days I do the programmed WOD.  The rower from CWCF has been a game changer as running with a mask is a 'No'...thank you, Brian!

What do you love about CWCF?

Lots of things!  One highlight: it is where I met my soon-to-be husband!

What do you do outside of CrossFit? (work? school? etc?) I teach a project-based scientific communication course at MIT. What is something about you we might not know?

I have two doggos...one of which is Caly and she has been with me for 16 years!  Budders is 13.

Short term: staying sane / fit during the pandemic. Long term: promoting STEM education by teaching real science rather than the standard 'cookie cutter' laboratory courses.  Currently I am developing a new class that will be launched in the Fall...the goal is to teach concepts in a way that does not require expensive equipment / supplies, but still allows students to develop novel research ideas and learn from failure. What motivates or inspires you?

Being my best me. What is your best tip for new members? Stick with it!
