January 2020 Member of the Month: Peter Belanger

Congratulations to our January 2020 Member of the Month, Peter Belanger!

Peter has made a great impact on the Commonwealth community. We are thrilled to celebrate him as our first Member of the Month of the decade! Here is what our coaches have to say about him:

"Peter is a dedicated athlete, he's attended pretty much every day since he joined. He's receptive to feedback and respectful towards coaches. He is intrinsically motivated at the gym and challenges himself to get better every day. He has a great attitude and we love the way he contributes to the culture of the gym. "

"Peter has been an excellent addition to the gym. His humility and work ethic set an excellent example for the other athletes in the gym. He is a pleasure to have in class and his consistent attendance has been a large contributor to his success. Peter is highly coachable and always willing to listen to any feedback. To top it all off, he's usually rocking a smile during even the most grueling metcon. Congrats Peter, it's well deserved!"

"Peter puts in hard work and is consistent about applying coach feedback. He is fun to have in class and has made amazing progress in his time here!"

Do you have any nicknames?

Nope, people usually just call me Pete or Peter.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Andover, MA and went to college in Waltham, MA. I moved to northern California for about two years for work, then moved back east this past spring.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

A little over a year, I onboarded in the fall of 2018.

What brought you to CWCF?

I moved close to the gym in April and did a week long drop in, then signed up and have been loving it since.

What classes do you usually attend?

6:30 am, it’s the best way to start the day.

What do you love about CWCF?

The coaches and athletes are helpful and motivating, it reminds me of my days as a swimmer.

What do you do outside of CrossFit? (work? school? etc?)

I work as a data analyst at a small tech company and I’m in grad school part time working towards a master’s degree in computer science. I like to ski and golf when I can, though that doesn’t end up happening a lot.

What is something about you we might not know?

I’ve driven from coast to coast (MA <--> CA) twice -- I drove out west with my brother in 7 days and drove back solo in 10 days.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

I like kipping pull-ups a lot, it’s always amazing to me how much easier a pull-up can be with a good kip.

What is your greatest achievement in the gym so far?

I had never done a ring muscle up before coming to Commonwealth, but now I’m comfortable getting on the rings during a WOD.

What is one short-term goal, one long-term goal, and what have you been doing to work on them?

In the short term, I’d like to beat my Murph time from last year wearing a vest for the first time. I’m working on weighted push ups and squats at home a few times a week after work, and I’ll have to get some time on the rig with the vest soon.

Outside of CrossFit I’m somewhere between my undergrad accounting degree and a software engineer -- I’d like to complete the transformation to software engineer over the next few years. To get there I’ve tried to find a job where I’m learning the right things working with the right people, and I’m slowly working on a master’s degree to better understand the fundamentals.

What motivates or inspires you?

Seeing other people working hard to improve, then seeing the improvements!

What is your best tip for new members?

Be consistent! Try to create a weekly schedule that works for you and stick to it.

Do you have anything to add?

I’m very happy to be here, thank you for all of the motivation and fitness advice!
