Congratulations to Brad Galle, our first Member of the Month for 2018!!! Brad has been a member at Commonwealth for two and a half years and an awesome addition to our community. We love Brad’s can-do, no-nonsense attitude and that he’s been getting his fantastic daughter, Paige, involved in CrossFit, too! Brad is a hard worker and has sought out additional coaching through our specialty classes and personal training. We are so glad to have Brad at Commonwealth, congratulations!
Do you have any nicknames?
Where are you from?
Born in Wayne NJ, college in Virginia, brief stint in Japan, back to NYC, grad school in Cambridge and then back to Summit NJ before moving to Cambridge in 2015
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started in 2010. I’ve had a few months off for injuries/surgeries/PT but have been consistent beyond that.
What brought you to CWCF?
CWCF was the first box that I came to when we were moving up here from NJ in June 2015. I met Brian Cox and Ming and definitely dug the vibe. I didn’t even bother checking anywhere else out.
What classes do you usually attend?
I come at different times between the 9am class and the 7:30 pm class. I like the weekend classes and open gym as well.
What do you do outside of CrossFit?
I play men’s league hockey – I’m a pretty bad hockey player since I started at age 39 right after my daughter started playing, but it’s a great workout.
What is something about you we might not know?
My first CrossFit gym ‘fired’ me. The owner said that I got injured too many times so he kicked me out. It turned out that I was working out with a bulging lumbar disk and a 75+% torn rotator cuff, so I eventually forgave him, got everything fixed and joined another box. Still makes for a great story though.
Who is your superhero?
My favorite CrossFit guy at the moment is Patrick Velner – I thought he was a good representative for us tall guys in CrossFit – then I found out he’s only 5’11 and just looks big since all the other guys are 5’7-5’8!
What is your favorite CrossFit movement?
I like pull-ups. Probably since I can actually do them. I hate thrusters.
What is your greatest achievement in the gym so far?
I did one bar muscle up in the 2016 Open. Chris Berardi actually taught me to do it during the timed WOD. I got one of the ugliest chicken armed BMU’s ever witnessed but it counted. I haven’t been able to do one since.
What is one short-term goal, one long-term goal, and what have you been doing to work on them?
In the short term, I’d like to focus on improving my short workout times/endurance. In the long term, I’d like to focus more on competing. I turn 50 next year and there are a lot of opportunities to compete in masters competitions. I have a long way to go…
What motivates or inspires you?
I see guys like Chuck and Mark in their seventies at the noon class and get great inspiration from them (also seeing our fearless leader getting back into working out with his new bionic hips). I definitely hope I will be as active as they are at that age!
What is your best tip for new members?
There have been tons of times that I haven’t want to come (especially after I peek at some of Larry’s more insane workouts in Wodify the previous day) but I just come anyway. No matter how much I have dreaded the workout before showing up, I have never left regretting it.
Do you have anything to add?
CrossFit definitely changed my life quite a bit. Over the years, I have gotten several friends started on CrossFit and they are always so grateful.
