Congratulations to long-time member, Pranav Kuber, our August Member of the Month! Pranav is a hard worker and a pleasure to have in class. He is warm and friendly to other members and makes an effort to participate in community activities. He is committed to the process of getting stronger and takes his time to tackle the more complex movements. We love that he constantly is working on the basics to improve his performance. We are so happy to have Pranav in our community!
Do you have any nicknames?
Pans, Pan, Puns. Some of these were coined in middle school, and have stuck around. There was a time growing up back home when some people didn’t know my real first name!
Where are you from?
Pune, India. It’s a charming city in Western India in the state of Maharashtra (about a 3 hour drive from Bombay), nicknamed “Oxford of the East” due to the presence of some well-known educational institutions. It’s also dubbed the cultural capital of the state and is known for some of the most delicious and diverse food in the country.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been doing Crossfit for about 3.5 years now.
What brought you to CWCF?
I was at a point where I was plateauing all of my workouts at a regular gym and was looking for something challenging. Around that time, I had dinner with a friend whose random acquaintance showed up and started raving about CrossFit. It sounded exactly like something I was looking for and so I immediately started looking for boxes close to home, and found CWCF. I signed up for a free class, and started a couple of months later.
What classes do you usually attend?
I usually attend the 7:30pm class on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Although, lately I’ve been concentrating on the barbell class.
What do you do outside of CrossFit?
I work as a software/research engineer at a company called Bytelight Inc. in Seaport. Our company does Bluetooth based indoor positioning systems for large retail spaces, hospitals, malls, etc. A short version is, we have a Bluetooth chip installed in each light in the ceiling that pairs up with your phone’s Bluetooth radio (or any Bluetooth device), and an algorithm triangulates your location in the store. This helps us push your location-specific advertisements, track shopping cart activity, chart user behavior, etc. Also, I should hasten to add that we don’t spy on you. It’s completely anonymous.
What is something about you we might not know?
Back home in India, I used to play table tennis on the national circuit. I represented my state and school/university multiple times from middle school through college.
Who is your superhero?
My grandmother. She used to teach calculus to high school students at the age of 83! I am always inspired by her attitude and the choices she made through her life.
What is your favorite CrossFit movement?
Double-unders. I get excited when I see them programmed in a WOD.
What is your greatest achievement in the gym so far?
I PR’ed my snatch recently at barbell class. I had been stuck on the same number for quite some time, and was able to finally break through (Thanks, Jess!).
What is one short-term goal, one long-term goal, and what have you been doing to work on them?
My short-term goal is to make a 300+ pound back squat, and my long-term goal is to try and do regular WODs at Rx weights. I believe that incremental progress is the best way to achieve something, so in order to achieve these goals, I’ve been focusing on improving my strength through barbell class and I think it’s going pretty well. Another short-term goal I’ve been working on is to bike to work everyday until October.
What motivates or inspires you?
Passionate and thoughtful people.
What is your best tip for new members?
Show up to class with consistency, but listen to your body and don’t get frustrated even if you’re stuck with something. Be patient and it will definitely work out with consistent practice.
Do you have anything to add?
I am grateful for the amazing community that CWCF offers. The wonderful people at CWCF help me stay inspired and happy.
